My work is rooted in a fascination with form, surface and the physical nature of materials.

Ceramics was my starting point, and clay still influences the way I work. I’m interested in how a form changes through the marks of the hand, glaze, paint and the unpredictability of firing. Cracks, variations and imperfections can become as important as the original form.

That interest in surface has carried into my painting, ink and mixed-media work. I enjoy the behaviour of materials — paint flowing and pooling, ink spreading beyond a mark, layers building up, and surfaces changing through weathering and time.

I don’t work towards one particular style. I’m more interested in exploring an idea and seeing where it leads. Sometimes the result is quiet and restrained; sometimes more energetic and unexpected.

Across the different media, I keep coming back to the pleasure of making and discovering something I could not have completely planned.

The work rewards looking slowly. Details, textures and changes in surface often reveal themselves over time.
