Cher Graham

I am untrained as an artist but since retiring to McGregor an insatiable appetite for creative play and experimentation has grown into a fun and lighthearted body of work in different medias. I love portraiture, be it from life drawing,  working initially from inspirational photographs or simply playing with shapes in a collage format and seeing where the creative process leads.  My love for this took on a whole new dimension when I was introduced to fabric collage by Jo Nowicki in her Lion House Studio in the village and I at last found a use for the trunks full of leftover fabrics and threads inherited from my mother. Using the multitude of scraps that would normally end up in the bin, along with unwanted soft furnishings or old garments, I use the colours and textures instinctively to contour and layer the characteristic features into being. As a result, no two works can ever be the same even though they may initially be inspired by the same image. Once each snippet is glued into place, I stitch the rows freehand (as straight  as possible!) using my beloved little 45 year-old Elna Lotus and voila!- a unique and lasting piece of wall art has found a place on terra firma. My work is all framed or mounted and looking for a good home!
