Mike Smart

I spent 40 years as a professional geologist, preparing to sail into the arts.

My extensive travel in rural Southern Africa allowed me to experience the rich diversity of terrain, ecosystems and culture. I was inspired to take up the brushes about 15 years ago. Retirement in 2017 gifted much more opportunity to interact with the rich Western Cape talent via workshops and painting outings.

Building mind pictures of the earth and its processes is second nature to me. My aptitude for landscape art was born crawling across, mapping and describing rocks.

Art provides a conduit for me to celebrate the road I have travelled. It has released me from the confines of scientific rigor and a corporate environment. My paintings illuminate Creation – nature, wide open spaces and ultimately freedom.
